Studying doesn’t have to feel overwhelming, draining, or chaotic—especially for women juggling school, work, personal goals, and everyday life. With the right strategies, your study sessions can feel focused, efficient, and even empowering. In this blog, we’ll explore effective study techniques designed to help you stay organized, boost productivity, and build confidence in your academic journey. Whether you’re returning to school, navigating a demanding course load, or simply trying to improve your habits, these methods will help you study smarter, not harder—so you can show up as your most capable, polished, and powerful self.

  1. Use the Pomodoro technique.

The Pomodoro Technique helps students stay focused by using short work intervals that prevent burnout, make tasks feel manageable, reduce procrastination, and build motivation through small, consistent wins. You can start off with 25:5 minute intervals, and then build your way up to 50:10 minute intervals. Adjust as you need and watch how quickly you can enter and remain in flow state.

How to Use the Pomodoro Technique

  1. Choose a specific task.

  1. Work for 25 minutes with full focus.

  1. Take a 5-minute break.

  1. Repeat this cycle four times, then take a longer 15–30 minute break.

  1. Separate study space and break space.

Separating your study space from your break space helps your brain understand when it’s time to focus and when it’s time to relax. Clear boundaries prevent distractions, improve concentration, and make your breaks feel more refreshing so you return to studying with better energy and clarity.

  1. Utilize active recall.

Active recall is a study method where you actively retrieve information from memory instead of passively rereading it. By quizzing yourself, using flashcards, or explaining concepts without looking at notes, you strengthen memory pathways and greatly improve long-term retention—making it one of the most effective ways to study.

  1. Pre-read new material before the lecture period.

Before attending a lecture on new material, take the time to pre-read. Depending on how much time you have, this can be reading the figure captions on your professor’s uploaded presentations, orreading the headers of the chapter to be lectured in the textbook. The most effective method that has worked for me is reading the headers of the sections, reading the first and last sentence of each section, and scanning over all the images the night before the lecture.

  1. Read before exams or quizzes.

On the day of an exam or quiz, the exam or quiz itself should not be the very first thing you read that day. Warm up your brain with some light reading before.
